The Quiet Side of Pismo: early sunshine, Stealthy Egrets, and Surf
There is something magical about waking up early in Pismo Beach. Before the crowds arrive and the afternoon wind picks up, the beach is entirely peaceful. The air is crisp and salty, and the wet sand acts like a giant mirror, reflecting the soft pastel colors of the morning sky.
If you stroll down by the water, you’ll usually share the shoreline with a few majestic Great Egrets, pacing the surf like elegant statues as they hunt for breakfast. These stunning white birds are absolute masters of stealth. They stand perfectly still or wade in slow motion, using their long, S-curved necks like coiled springs to suddenly strike down and catch fish or crabs with their dagger-like yellow bills. Fun fact: back in the late 19th century, these birds were almost wiped out because their beautiful white feathers were highly fashionable for ladies' hats. Thankfully, public outrage over this helped spark the birth of the conservation movement in North America, saving these coastal icons so we can still enjoy them today.
For me, the perfect Pismo morning is all about slowing down. You grab a hot, steaming coffee from a local spot, pull your hoodie tight, and watch these graceful hunters share the waves with the surfers paddling out near the pier. It’s the absolute best way to start your day.
