How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

1. Start With Movement
Standing completely still makes people feel awkward.
Instead, move a little between shots.
Examples:
Walk slowly toward the camera
Shift your weight from one foot to the other
Turn your shoulders slightly
Adjust your jacket or hair
Think: movement, not posing.

2. Angle Your Body
Standing straight toward the camera can feel stiff.
Turning slightly instantly looks more natural.
Simple rule:
Turn your body about 30–45 degrees, then look back toward the camera.

3. Keep Your Hands Busy
Hands are the number one thing people worry about.
The easiest trick is give them something to do.
Ideas:
Put one hand in a pocket
Hold your jacket collar
Run your fingers through your hair
Lean on something nearby
Hold a backpack or prop

4. Relax Your Shoulders
When people feel nervous, their shoulders naturally rise.
Take a quick breath and drop your shoulders slightly.
Before: 😬Shoulders up
After: 🙂Shoulders relaxed

5. Think of Something Fun
The best smiles happen when you're thinking about something real.
Instead of forcing a smile, think about:
A funny moment with friends
Something exciting about graduation
Your favorite song
A fun memory
Real thoughts create real expressions.

6. Wear Something That Feels Like You
Confidence shows up in photos when you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
Great options include:
✔ A favorite jacket✔ A casual outfit you love✔ Something slightly dressy✔ Layers for variety
Avoid anything that feels too stiff or not like you.

7. Trust the Photographer
You don’t have to know how to pose — that’s my job.
During your session I’ll guide you with simple directions like:
“Turn your shoulders a little.”
“Look toward the ocean.”
“Take two steps toward me.”
“Now laugh!”
Most of the best photos happen between poses, when you're just relaxing.

8. Remember — Everyone Feels This Way
Almost every senior says at the beginning:
“I’m awkward in photos.”
By the end of the session they usually say:
“That was actually fun!”
Being a little nervous is completely normal — and it fades quickly once we start shooting.
Final Tip
The best senior photos happen when you stop worrying about the camera and just enjoy the moment.
Relax, move a little, laugh, and trust the process.
Your personality is what makes the photos great.
