Newsletter May 2014

May…can you believe it!  Seems like only yesterday when we were ambling gently into Feb and now we are racing through 2014 into May and the summer!

The last Monday in May brings us Memorial Day - this year May 26th.  And just the day after, marks the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge 77 years ago!  A little quirky fact about the colour of the bridge….apparently it is 'International Orange'  Before the accidental orange appeared, the Navy were pushing for black and gold stripes - like a caution sign for passing ships…thankfully, their plight was ignored :-)

How important color is…to our world and our memories of our world.  This month my 'For the Photographer in You' section will talk about creating montages and gallery walls.  This is only the beginning…how you choose to arrange and display photographs is only part of a great display. Next month I will be focusing on complimentary and popping colors.  There is a really useful color wheel that helps to marry colors together when trying to decide what color goes well with another.

Happy May!

For the Photographer In You - Montages, Galleries and Photos that Work Well Together

A photo montage is the result of making a composite photo from joining two or more photos.  The result can often be seen as a seamless photo print itself. Sometimes it's so tricky to choose which photos should go into a frame for a multi photo gallery or how to arrange photos for a montage or display.  There are lots of aspects of photos that could be considered -

Theme - Does the set of photos represent a theme?  The collection below are obviously made up of the same baby.  But themes could be anything from a holiday to a colour to a fruit collection or even a theme that has viewers guessing.

Composition - where are the main subjects in your photos?    What do you want to be the main subject in your montage?  What do you want the viewer to look at or notice?  Do you want the image to be pleasing to the eye and include some symmetrical elements or would you prefer a more questioning and random image.

The Purpose - Where is your montage to be displayed and for  whom are you designing it?  Is it a picture from college of all the great times you had with your friends?  Is it an abstract image that is difficult for viewers to interpret?

Colors - This is something that I want to include in my June newsletter, it is such a big topic on its own.  But for May, it will suffice to say that it should be considered in every montage or gallery to ensure maximum impact.

In summary…there are many elements that go into making up a montage and…the process of creating can be as unpredictable and creative as any other piece of art.  but one thing is for sure…it is a whole lot of fun and you really don't know what you will end up with until to give it a go!
This in another montage I made of a collection of images of ballet ornaments.
May Project

My new section…as the quote goes - 'if you want something done, ask a busy person' (Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)).  So herewith a little bit of camera fun to make your May busier.  Choose between 5 and 10 images to collect together and make  a multi photo gallery or montage with them. Don't forget there are no rules…use only a portion of a photograph if it works.
And that's it for May!

Thanks so much for reading my newsletter and I look forward to hearing any comments you might have…and of course any creations you would like to share!

Best wishes,

Tracey xx
