 Newsletter March 2015

Hello everyone,

March!!!  Flowers are appearing, the weather is warming and I thought I'd share with you a little Irish tradition as we have Saint Patricks day on the 17th..."t' be sure". I thought it might make for an nice alternative to leprechauns and shamrocks :-)

Above is a photograph of the Irish Claddagh ring originating from Galway in Ireland.  The elements of this ring are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

There are several ways to wear the ring and it may indicate the wearers romantic availability or lack thereof!
Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship: "their heart is open."
When worn on the right hand but with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that "someone has captured their heart".
A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger facing outward away from the body generally indicates that the wearer is engaged. When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and facing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married." (~ Murphy, Colin, and Donal O'Dea (2006) The Feckin' Book of Everything Irish).

This months newsletter comes with a couple of great March opportunities as well as what's new and coming from the 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera' blog.  There is information for voting for the best of the best BayAreaParent services (me please) as well as my own 'Little Ditty' - early spring has brought early flowers blooming and a great time to get some photos taken.

Thanks for reading and enjoy the early start of spring!

For the Photographer in You - 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera!'

February got off to a really great start!  Thanks to all of you who signed up for my blog - 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera'  I released 3 blogs all about aperture - phew!  And the scary thing is...I could go on....but I won't!  Next month we will cover shutter speed and I will continue with my drawing attempts and images to get the message over as clearly as I can.
Just how long the shutter is open for when you take a photo allows a different amount of light to enter your camera and has a really big effect on the final image of your subject.  Here are just a few examples -

Sports images - is your subject moving a lot during sports or riding a bike for example.
Creative images - water movement - are you trying to capture a stream that is moving?  What effect do you want to create - would you like it to be blurry so that the viewer can see the movement in the water or do you want to freeze the movement.
-   Animals - are you trying to capture images of your pet, who keeps on moving?  Or even trying to take that shot of the squirrels or birds in the yard?
- Nighttime - Do you want to create great photos of moving lights at night?
- Racing - Do you want to blur the background whilst keep a racing car perfectly focus to give the effect of great speed?

I will cover all of these and more during the March shutter speed blogs and will also introduce how shutter speed has a perfect relationship with aperture from my last blogs

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Impressions on a Yellow Canvas

A lovely friend and fellow photographer got in touch last week to say that she had found the most beautiful fields of yellow flowers blooming for as far as the eye can see and they really are!  Here are a few images!  I am thinking of starting a location based mini-shoot offering.  It will always be great value and will involve short shoots at a specific location which has something attractive to offer.  Look out for them being advertised in the newsletter and on Facebook.
