Newsletter July 2014

July….summer…..vacation….sun!  From Northern California, it seems that two of the most popular vacation destinations are Disney and Hawaii…..difficult choice certainly!  Disneyland opened on the 17th of July 1955 so will be going for the 60 year anniversary next year…better get tickets now!

Another milestone along the modern vacationing lines in July was in 1897 when Amelia Earheart was born.  She set many records during her adventurous time, the last one of which was to set the record for her east-west (Oakland to Hawaii) round-the-world flight from Oakland, California in 15 hours and 47 minutes in 1937!

This months newsletter brings great offers on a new product line – fashionista parties….you don't want to miss this, if you have a daughter who loves dressing up.

The photographer in you talks about getting better holiday snaps and don't forget this months quote at the end of the newsletter from Bill Bryson.

Happy vacationing!

For the Photographer In You - Holiday Snaps - How and When?

For those who are getting away this month, or even visiting somewhere new for a day, here are some thoughts on how you may be able to improve the photographs you capture -

- Use the rule of thirds - horizons are better if they are not in the middle of the photograph, photographic teaching recommends that a photograph should be divided into thirds either horizontally, vertically or both to create a more balanced shot.

- Patience - sometimes, it is really worth picking a scene that you like and then waiting for something different or interesting to happen in it.  After all….holidays should be about relaxing right?

- Think before you shoot - often you arrive at a great location and are so excited about it, that the temptation is to get the shot in right away.  The result, is a shot that everyone has in their collection - try to stop and think about alternatives.

- Change your angle - just moving yourself around the object or getting higher or lower can give you a more interesting shot.  Also moving further away, or actually closer to emphasise a small part of the object.

- Change the angle of your camera - don't be afraid to take a shot with an angle or change the orientation of your camera to vertical to get a better composition.

Quote of the Month

'I still enjoy traveling a lot. I mean, it amazes me that I still get excited in hotel rooms just to see what kind of shampoo they've left me.' ~ Bill Bryson
