 Newsletter April 2015

Hello everyone,

April....'Sweet April showers do spring May flowers' ~Thomas Tusser.  Lets hope so....in the Bay area!

In my April calendar, I notice that the 7th is set as 'No housework day' - whoa!!!  I think we should all go for that one!  And I couldn't resist sharing the number one April Fool's Day hoax of all time (according to - http://hoaxes.org/aprilfool/) - here it is -

In 1957 the BBC announced on a news documentary show (Panorama) that due to a very mild winter, which almost eliminated the dreaded spaghetti weavil, the Swiss were enjoying bumper crop of spaghetti.  It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss people pulling down strands of spaghetti from trees.  Huge numbers of people were taken in, with many contacting the BBC asking how they can grow their own spaghetti tree - the response was '"place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." :-)  Hilarious!

This month's newsletter comes with another opportunity to vote for your favourite places and services in the Bay area.  See the Latest and Greatest below for prizes and a link to cast your votes - voting ends April 30th.

I have also outlined the subject for the forthcoming April blogs for the photographers amongst you - read about it and sign up below if you want to know more.

Finally I included a few images that I entered in a recent competition - see what you think and I'd love some comments if you get a chance.

Thanks for reading and enjoy the newsletter and enjoy your own April Fools Day!

Latest and Greatest

Oh my goodness (I would say OMG but I feel like I am not quite entitled to use acronyms from this generation :-))  These kids were too cute!  I was so taken with these guys and when I looked at the images from the shoot, almost every one made me smile!  They really tell a story and it seems that these two really are the best of friends.  Thank you for asking me to photograph your beautiful family.  You obviously have so much fun together and I hope I was able to capture a glimmer of it!

For the Photographer in You - 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera!'

March was a great hit with the 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera' blog. Following February's aperture attack, March saw us take on shutter speed and if you've been following the blog, you will be getting to know that those two settings on the camera allow you to get really creative once you understand how they work and also how they work together.  Next month we are racing into focus;

Did you ever wonder how to throw the background of an image out of focus and only have the subject in focus?  This requires and understanding of aperture, but also relies upon a specific focus setting for your camera.

You may also be forgiven for thinking that there is only one type of autofocus - actually, modern camera's do a great job of autofocusing, but there are a few settings that are key to helping the camera and the photographer really get the shots they want and it does depend on your subject.  I will cover all of these options with examples during April.

More complicated aspects
of focus, towards the end of April, will include focus stacking and back button focusing....eh? I hear you say.  Want to know more...check out the April blog - sign up using the button below or check the blog page on www.medcalfe.com

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Competition Entries

I know I am often encouraging you to sign up and send in your favourite images that you have taken to win prizes so I thought I would share with you a few entries I have submitted for a recent photographic competition. Aside from choosing the images to submit, I had to give each of the images a name....and that's more tricky that you think!  I would love if you have any comments!
